What is a RED BUOY?

This is called a nun buoy. A nun buoy is similar to that of a red day marker. It shows the edge of a navigational channel, but a buoy is typically used in deeper waters since it can be placed with an anchor instead of a piling. It is large and takes on a cone shape rather than a triangle you see on a red day marker.

The opposite of a nun buoy is a can buoy. The can buoy should be on the opposite edge of a navigational channel.

In the top left you see a number and symbol. This is how the buoy is shown on a marine map, otherwise known as a chart.
