Can you tell I'm crazy for coconut water? Look at all those coconuts!
As promised below is the summary of what I took. I'm a fairly active person so as you can see a lot of my items were sports gear… if you won't be taking such things with you, you'll have even more room for things you find valuable and useful on your travels :)

NOTE REGARDING CARRY-ON BAG VS. CHECKED BAG AT AIRPORT:
I took a single small backpack that weighed about 7.4 kg in total. A lot of airlines have weight limits for carry-on bags, and my backpack exceeded this limit. Regardless, I did not report it as checked luggage and took it on the plane as a carry-on, and luckily never had any problems. I flew in a total of 13 planes over the 6 months and no one ever weighed my bag… so you can choose to do this or not at your own discretion.

* long-sleeve black shirt
* zip-up sweater (NEW TIP: wear layers on the plane and choose an insulating but light-weight sweater)
* light-weight running shoes (NEW TIP: take flip flops… or choose to buy when you arrive as I did)
* cycling shoes (optional)
* sunglasses
* underwear (ladies: thongs are more compact!)
* socks x3
* bras x2
* bathing suit

* laptop case (NEW TIP: do not bring a new computer… it will surely get knocked around and maybe even stolen. If you can, don't bring one at all)
CELL PHONE

* small notebook for documenting spending

* pencil and multi-coloured pen
DOCUMENTS
* sturdy document holder containing
* photocopy of passport and IDs
* extra passport photos for visa runs
* travel insurance card
* flight info
WALLET
* passport
* American currency
* local currency (convert in home country)
* IDs and debit/credit card (NEW TIP: speak with your bank before you go and change to an account type that does not charge you for withdrawing money fro ATMs)
TOIELTRIES

* zipper bags to compartmentalize (protects from spillage)
* louffa
* coconut oil = body lotion
* bar shampoo and conditioner (no liquids on plane if using carry-on)
* female products (a couple pads and tampons, DIVA cup)
* toothbrush and floss (airport will take away your toothpaste if more than 100 ml/g)
* nail filer and tweezers
* a few hair elastics and bobby pins
* limited makeup (eyeliner, concealer, mascara)
* cheap earrings (might lose or get stolen)
* tissue paper
* hand sanitizer
* vaseline (highly recommended!)
FOOD
* dried fruit (or nuts) for the plane or on the road
* portable sturdy travel cutlery (fork and knife only as airports will take away and knives if your bag is a carry-on)
* water bottle
* psyllium husks to keep bowel movements normal (stir 1 Tbsp in water twice a day - highly recommended!)
MISCELLANEOUS
* earplugs (NEW TIP: and sleep mask if needed)
* chewing gum
