Language Matters: Talking about Disability | Dr. Mohammad Samad Zubairi

The way we talk about people reflects what we think about them. It also affects how we treat them personally and societally. So it’s important that consider carefully the way we talk about or talk to people with disabilities. Should we used terms like, "confined to a wheelchair", for example? How can we avoid language that reflects dependency, pity, fear or patronizing attitudes? What about terms like "#challenged" or "differently abled"?
Dr. Mohammad Samad Zubairi is a developmental #pediatrician and assistant professor at #McMaster University. He works clinically with #children and youth with #autism and related #neurodevelopmental disorders. He joins Dr. Safiyyah Ally to discuss why language matters, and how we can best speak about and with people with disabilities.
