US government has shut down after Democrats and Republicans fail to reach agreement
With the federal government shutting down as of Oct. 1, lawmakers are confronting echoes of the last major shutdown and longest funding lapse in U.S. history — a 35-day impasse during President Donald Trump's first term.
With lawmakers failing to act, the October 2025 shutdown marks the first since the record-breaking 2018-19 closure.
