Private IP Interconnect in Oracle RAC | How Nodes Communicate Network Layer #7#oraclerac #education

Private Interconnect is a dedicated network used for communication between nodes in Oracle RAC.
It is not used for client connections. Instead, it is used for internal communication such as block transfer and coordination between nodes.

🔍 Why Private Interconnect is Important
In RAC, multiple nodes access the same database.
If one node needs a data block that another node already has in memory, Oracle avoids disk access and transfers the block directly through the interconnect.
This mechanism is called Cache Fusion.

🔍 What Happens Internally

Node2 requests a block
GCS identifies which node owns the block
LMS process transfers the block
Transfer happens over private interconnect

🔍 Why Interconnect Performance Matters

High latency → slow block transfer
Network issues → RAC performance degradation
Heavy traffic → wait events (gc waits)

🔍 Important Clarification

Public IP → client communication
VIP → failover handling
SCAN → connection routing
Private Interconnect → internal node communication

🔍 Interview Insight
Q: What happens if interconnect is slow?
A: Cache Fusion becomes slow, leading to high gc wait events and performance issues.
