Wing Foiling | How to Knee Start on a Small Wing Board

Welcome back to Wing Wednesdays with MACkiteboarding.com! In today's video, I'm excited to share a quick tip on how to knee start on a small wingboard. As more and more riders are transitioning to smaller boards, there's a learning curve involved. But don't worry, I've got you covered with some helpful tips to make the process smoother.

In this video, we'll focus on learning to knee start on small-volume wing foil boards. Now, what exactly constitutes a small volume wing board can vary depending on factors like weight and ability. Generally, for someone around 195 pounds, like me, I consider boards around 75-80 liters to be small. Of course, once you get used to it, you can even knee-start on boards as small as 45-50 liters. Remember, conditions and board design play a role too.

Now, let's jump into the tips. First and foremost, staying low is crucial. When you find yourself struggling and battling the chop, it might not be immediately clear what to do. The key is to get low on your board, starting on your knees with your feet flat on the board. This lowers your center of gravity, making it easier to maintain balance. Keeping your chest and head low also contributes to better stability and balance, so give it a try.

Moving on, let's talk about the conditions. If you're fortunate enough to have flat water and strong winds of around 25 knots or more, knee starting becomes relatively easy. The power from your wing allows you to lean on it for balance, just like training wheels. However, in lighter conditions, especially below 18 knots, it can be challenging, especially when combined with choppy waters, waves, or strong currents. If possible, seek out calmer environments with adequate wind to make your learning journey smoother. And if not, consider using a board you're familiar with to build your skills before transitioning to the smaller board.

Lastly, it's essential to acknowledge that starting with a really small wing foil board, without prior experience, can be difficult. If you decide to go down this path, be prepared for the challenge and embrace a learning mindset. Success may not come quickly, even for experienced foilers or athletic individuals. Learning wing foiling takes time, so don't be discouraged. If you need guidance on determining the right board size or refining your technique, don't hesitate to reach out to us for advice.
