Which Flower Seeds to Direct Sow Vs. Start Indoors // Northlawn Flower Farm
Today I'm sharing what seeds I direct sow vs. start indoors under lights. There are a few qualities I look for in a seed that I'm going to sow directly. Does it need cold stratification? Does it prefer to be direct seeded? Does it germinate so readily and quickly that it is of no use to put it under lights? Can I purchase high quantities of the seed at an inexpensive price? And as always think about your particular pest in regards to direct sowing.
Here is a list of everything I direct sow. The majority of my direct sowing is done in the fall with hardy annuals. Please take into consideration that everyone is different, and this is what works for me personally.
Direct Seeded Hardy Annuals - Larkspur, Nigella, Bells of Ireland, Poppies, Bupleurum, Bachelor's Buttons, Corn Cockle, Lunaria annua (Money Plant), Sea Holly, Verbascum, Feverfew
Direct Seeded Tender Annuals - Zinnias, Sunflowers (depending on your pests), Marigold, Tithonia, Cosmo, Nasturtiums, Calendula, Quick Growing Vines such as Scarlet Runner Beans and Purple Hyacinth Bean, Basil
If you are thinking of a flower that is not on this list I am most likely starting it inside under lights or in rare cases purchasing plugs. If your curious about a particular flower please leave a comment and I'm share all the info possible.
Common flowers I start under lights - Strawflower, Statice, Sweet William, Lambada, Foxglove, Snapdragons, Gomphrena, Celosia, Amaranth, Sweet Pea, Dara, Ammi, Honeywort, Yarrow, Black Eyed Susans, Stock (I no longer grow this), Cup and Saucer Vine, Bellflower, Delphinium, Lisianthus, Orlaya, Scabiosa, Aster, Craspedia
I'm always learning and experimenting. I had hoped to try Orlaya as a direct sown fall crop, but I did not receive the seeds in time. I hope to give an update on this next growing season.
