Brexit: Tory MPs must back Boris Johnson and the United Kingdom - not the EU! (4k)
Those Tory politicians who would back the EU position against their own country should get with the UK programme and quick.
Here we go again, Conservative Party grandees, backbenchers and peers lining up to batter their own country in favour of the European Union.
And I can't work out whether really they're just closet Remainers looking for the final opportunity to wreck a proper Brexit, or those with an eye on the main chance to replace Boris Johnson or just plain simple-minded.
But thankfully I gather that the numbers are at most about twenty, so not sufficient to derail the government's planned legislation. Although enough to dent Boris Johnson's majority.
And their lamentable position seems to be that the UK should stick to the absolute letter of the Withdrawal Agreement Treaty to protect the Good Friday Agreement (GFA), even if it means losing control over Northern Ireland.
And that is at the pinnacle of Doublethink.
One of the central planks of the Good Friday Agreement is to NOT upset the constitutional position of Northern Ireland within the UK, unless you have the explicit permission of the people of Northern Ireland.
And the Irish Border Protocol within the Withdrawal Agreement does upset the constitutional position of Northern Ireland with respect to the UK.
I would put forward that the UK government agreeing to monitor even a few goods as they cross the Irish Sea between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK, is against the letter and the spirit of the Good Friday Agreement. But I'm just a layman in these matters.
But Brussels has now indicated that, unless the UK agrees to a deal that favours the EU, they will push that protocol for all it's worth.
The initial idea was that the UK would collect tariffs for the few goods going into Northern Ireland that were at risk of going over the border into Southern Ireland and the EU Single Market.
But what the EU is suggesting, is that Brussels could declare that all goods that cross the Irish Sea into Northern Ireland are at risk of being transported across the border into their Single Market.
Such a move would require the charging of tariffs on all goods going from the UK into Northern Ireland - even those that would never go over the border into Southern Ireland.
That would cause the erection of a full border between Northern Ireland and Great Britain. It would be a blockade of Northern Ireland, without asking the people of Northern Ireland. That is totally unconstitutional and breaks the Good Friday Agreement that the EU says it is so keen to preserve.
And I would add, if putting a border between the North and South of Ireland breaks the Good Friday Agreement and threatens the peace, then so does forcing a hard border between Northern Ireland and the rest of the UK.
But none of those Tory rebels seems to want to engage on that point.
And, if Brussels really had no intention of doing as we suspect they want to, they would be the first to say they have no problem with this. They are instead calling it a breach of trust and insisting we leave this significant legal defect in place. A defect that could allow a non-signatory to the Good Friday Agreement - the EU - to facilitate Southern Ireland in breaching it.
All I hear is EU squealing.
As Boris Johnson wrote in the Telegraph:
"By actively undermining the Union of our country, such an interpretation would seriously endanger peace and stability in Northern Ireland. This interpretation cannot have been the real intention of those who framed the protocol (it certainly wasn't ours) – and it is therefore vital that we close that option down."
