Beginning Conversations in Polish *Memorize these Questions* Part 1
Beginning to speak, is often a daunting and nerve-wrecking task, ESPECIALLY for those of use who are a less social, perfectionists, or those relatively new to the language. The late, great Moses McCormick (Laoshu505000) had a great approach that vibes heavily with my Simplified Method, and that is this - Learn to anticipate the questions, and know how to answer. It sounds so basic... but we often press on with learning more vocabulary, reading more, and trying to listen that we don't build the CONFIDENCE gained from speaking.
"I'll speak when I'm ready." Well... I've got news for you - If you've had your nose in the books, you know the 1000 most common words, and/or you've been consistently practicing your Polish for at least a year, you're ready.
Now...I completely agree with Krashen, Kaufman, Lampriello, etc... but I still hold the belief that there are too few that are not doing what is NEEDED of them and that is to get yourself in front a language teacher, language exchange partner or simply start a conversation with a native speaker. If you've seen Moses videos... you'll see just how he puts himself out there. You'll also see that he spends a lot of time on practicing and rehearsing the questions that present themselves ALL THE TIME (especially in the first encounter).
If you like, pause the video and try to formulate what your response would be. If you can not yet build a response, write it out in a journal. Avoid short and direct answers when you can. Use keywords or what I call "utility words" in order to help and extend your answers. It will likely create more of a "WOW factor" with the native speaker and they will be inclined to speak more. The longer the conversation, the more time you have the with speaking and listening. Double Plus Good!
