Pitorro is an illegal and traditional alcoholic beverage, elaborated mainly in the countryside of Puerto Rico by rum makers, most of whom have inherited secret family recipes.

The politics and economic history around pitorro go back to the 1910’s and play a big role in the timeline of this iconic beverage, including imposed laws with the invasion of the United States government to the island and their commercialization of the liquor, provoking a rise in the illegal production of aguardiente.

Today, pitorro is considered one of the most important elements in any Puerto Rican celebration.
