Salcombe - Devon - England - 4K Virtual Walk - August 2020

In this video we take a leisurely stroll around the beautiful coastal town of Salcombe. Known for its outstanding coastal views and rolling surrounding countryside, as well as a centre for sailing. In fact with its estuary location, Salcombe is a water sports haven - whether it be sailing, kayaking, surfing or paddle boarding. Our walk starts near the Salcombe Estuary Rowing Club. We walk along Island Street, passing Salcombe Dairy famous for their award winning icecreams, sorbets and chocolate! We continue along Island Street, passing Island Street Deli, Salcombe Holiday Homes, Salcombe Boatstore, Salcombe Boat Sales, Will Bees Bespoke, Salcombe Bike Hire, Saltrock Salcombe, Coast & Country Cottages, Salcombe Embroiderers, Island Street Bar & Grill, Salcombe DIY, Devon Boat Sales, Salcombe Gin, Paper Bird Island and Salcombe Antiques to name but a few! We then take the coast path around the waters edge to enjoy the glorious views of the estuary, boats and rolling Devon countryside.

Our route then takes us through the town, passing the RNLI Salcombe Lifeboat Station, The Fortescue Inn, Salcombe Eye Care, The Bake House Salcombe, Captain Flints, Cranch's Pantry, Cranch's Sweet Shop, Roly's Fudge Pantry and The Salcombe Yawl. We continue along Fore Street passing The Kings Arms and Victoria Inn. We then enter Whitestrand Car Park and Whitestrand Quay. From here you will see where the South Sands Ferry departs. Taking foot passengers to and from Whitestrand to the beautiful South Sands Beach. Here you will also find Whitestrand Boat Hire and Salcombe Harbour Authority. Making our way up Fore Street we pass the Salcombe Ferry Company, The Salcombe Candle Company, The Salcombe Deli and Dick and Wills. We then reach The Ferry Inn and take a look at the Salcombe Landing where the ferry departs for East Portlemouth. One of the most popular ways to reach East Portlemouth Beach is to journey across the Salcombe Estuary on the East Portlemouth Ferry. Providing access from Salcombe to East Portlemouth every day of the year, come rain or shine, the ferry sails from the Jubilee Ferry Pier in the summer months and from Whitestrand Pontoon in the winter months.

We continue our walk up Fore Street and Cliff Road where we reach The Cliff House Salcombe, an historic, waterfront property with stunning, uninterrupted views of the Salcombe Estuary and the golden beaches of East Portlemouth. Cliff House has been at the very heart of life in Salcombe since it was placed in Trust in 1921 and has hosted decades of parties, dances, dinners, meetings, exhibitions, plays and weddings, as well as being home to the Salcombe Yacht Club, the Salcombe Town Council and the Salcombe Library.

We've now reached the Salcombe War Memorial and gardens. These gardens boast stunning estuary views which we soak up before finishing our walk by the Salcombe Harbour Hotel & Spa.

Salcombe is a popular resort town in the South Hams district of Devon, south west England. The town is close to the mouth of the Kingsbridge Estuary, mostly built on the steep west side of the estuary. It lies within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The town's extensive waterfront and the naturally sheltered harbour formed by the estuary gave rise to its success as a boat and shipbuilding and sailing port and, in modern times, tourism especially in the form of pleasure sailing and yachting. The town is also home to a traditional shellfish fishing industry. The town is part of the electoral ward of Salcombe and Malborough, for which the 2011 census recorded a total population of 3,353.

Kingsbridge Estuary lies between Bolt Head and Sharpitor on the west and Portlemouth Down on the east, and runs inland for some 5.3 miles. The estuary was designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest in February 1987 and is also a Local Nature Reserve.
