"I have just visited the museum of Japanese immigration to Peru, where I observed valuable documents and materials and listened to explanations. One hundred twenty-four years ago, in 1899, 790 Japanese arrived in Peru on the Sakura Maru (ship). I would like to fix it in my mind. I will keep in my heart that Japanese immigrants and descendants overcame many difficulties and sorrows and have performed with honesty, diligence, and helping each other and that they have contributed to Peruvian society, earning its trust. Today many people of Japanese ancestry are still active in various fields. I believe that the efforts of every one of you are linked to the deepening of friendly relations between Japan and Peru, I would like to express my deepest gratitude ".

STORYLINE:
Japanese Princess Kako arrived in Peru on Friday on an official visit to commemorate 150 years of diplomatic relations.

Kako led a ceremony to celebrate the start of bilateral relations in 1873 when both countries signed a treaty of friendship, commerce, and navigation.

Later, the Japanese princess unveiled a postage stamp marking the date at Lima's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

She is expected to visit several landmark sites, including Cuzco, the Andean capital of the Inca Empire, between the 15th and 16th centuries.

From there, the princess will head to Qoricancha, or “The Golden Temple” in the Quechua language, considered the most important — and most sacred — temple by the Incas.

While in Lima, Princess Kako will visit a school for students suffering from hearing loss.

According to the Japanese embassy in Peru, Kako has attended speech competitions among deaf students in Japan, where she has given speeches in sign language.
