Making A 3D Printed Keyboard For The Raspberry Pi Zero Laptop
In this follow-up video, we take our custom 3D-printed retro laptop project to a new level by adapting it to accommodate a widely available 40% keyboard PCB. If you enjoyed the original build, you’ll love this enhanced version as we combine functionality, aesthetics, and a touch of innovation with custom 3D-printed components.
Our journey begins in Fusion 360, where we measure and design new mounting points to perfectly fit the 40% keyboard PCB into our retro-inspired laptop. Watch as we bring this design to life, carefully building the mounts and seamlessly installing the keyboard. Along the way, a test of a 3D-printed keycap on a textured PEI plate with a striking geometric finish inspires us to 3D-print every keycap for the keyboard, along with a matching keyboard plate.
The upgraded laptop now sports a cool dark blue finish, enhanced with geometric patterns thanks to the textured PEI plate that produces a smooth, refined look. This textured finish brings a unique, modern touch to the retro aesthetic, blending old-school style with contemporary design.
Throughout the build, we’ll showcase the assembly process, discuss the challenges and solutions encountered while integrating the new keyboard, and highlight the visual and tactile appeal of the 3D-printed keycaps and keyboard plate.
Whether you’re into retro computing, 3D printing, or DIY tech projects, this video dives into the details of adapting, upgrading, and refining a custom-built laptop. Join us as we transform this laptop into an even more unique piece of portable computing with custom, 3D-printed keycaps and a fresh, geometric-inspired finish!
