A Walking Tour of Historic Nauvoo Illinois

Historic Nauvoo Illinois sits on the banks of the Mississippi river in Hancock County near Iowa and Missouri. Originally known as Commerce in the 1830s, the town's name changed with the arrival of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints (more commonly known as Mormons), in 1839. The Mormons drained the swampy areas and began building a town where they hoped to live in peace after they were driven from Ohio and Missouri. Nauvoo flourished under their industry and the population ranged from 12,000 to 15,000 by 1844, and was bigger than Chicago. The Nauvoo Temple was the crown jewel of Nauvoo until was destroyed by arson in the late 1840s.

The Mormons were driven from Nauvoo by angry mobs in 1846. Nauvoo then became home to European Utopianists known as the Icarians. They occupied Nauvoo until the late 1850s. Later, Nauvoo became a center of Catholic faith in the region. The LDS Church rebuilt the Nauvoo Temple on the same site it stood 150 years prior. Both the LDS Church and the Community of Christ, both of whom honor Joseph Smith as their founder, have restored many of the 1840s buildings and offer tours.

This video covers many of the buildings restored by the LDS and Community of Christ churches.
