Can you sell the same online course on Udemy and Teachable (or Thinkific, Skillshare, Kajabi, etc.?)

This is one of the most frequent comments that I received on my last video where I did a comparison of Udemy vs. Teachable - so I thought I’d address it in this video.

Unfortunately, the answer isn’t a simple yes or no. As you’ll see in a minute, in some cases you can sell the same course on both platforms and in other cases, you can’t.

First, let me start off by saying that Teachable doesn’t have any restrictions on where and how you sell your courses. When you sign up for Teachable, you are paying to use their online course software. You aren’t giving Teachable a license to resell your courses.

However, when you sell courses on Udemy, you are giving them a license to resell your content.

When it comes to licensing your courses to Udemy, there are two types of licenses that you need to be aware of: exclusive and non-exclusive.

An exclusive license is an agreement to only sell your online courses through Udemy. And a non-exclusive license means that you have the legal right to sell your content through any course platform that you like, including Udemy.

The type of license that applies to your course, depends on whether it’s part of the Udemy for Business program.

The Udemy for Business program is a subscription program that allows companies and organizations to purchase a license that gives members of their organization access to thousands of courses on Udemy for a set monthly fee.

Courses that are included in the Udemy for Business subscription program receive a royalty based on how many people view their course.

If Udemy adds your course to their Udemy for Business course collection --- their terms state that they will have an exclusive license to sell your online course -- meaning that you can’t sell it on any other platform and if you do, you are violating their terms of service.

Not only that, but they also say you can’t create other similar courses that would directly compete with the course that is part of the Udemy for Business collection and sell that course on another platform either.

If your course is not part of the Udemy for Business collection, then Udemy has a non-exclusive license to sell your online course. In other words, you are free to sell it on any other platform such as Teachable, Thinkific, Skillshare, or Kajabi - just to name a few.

You can opt-in or out of the Udemy for Business program by going the “Promotional Preferences” section of your Udemy dashboard and unchecking the Udemy for Business Content Subscription opt-in box.

Once you opt out of the Udemy for Business Program, Udemy will stop offering your course as part of that collection within 12 months. However, any user who previously enrolled in your course while it was included in the Udemy for Business collection will continue to have access to the content as long as their company is enrolled in the program.

So, the answer is “Yes” you can sell your online courses on Udemy and another platform like Teachable, Thinkific or Skillshare at the same time as long as it’s not part of the Udemy for Business program.

And depending on your business model and goals, this might make for you. Personally, this did not make sense for my business and I have removed most of my courses from Udemy at this point.
However, I’d like to know what you think?

Do you think that it’s a good business decision to sell your course on more than one platform?

Let me know what you think in the comments.
