Palawan Otters or Asian small-clawed otter (Ep 13)
Today's local species in focus: Palawan Otters or the Asian small-clawed otter. Most people even residents of Palawan have no idea that otters exist in their surrounding ecosystems. This is resulting in massive habitat loss and creating an ICUN vulnerable status. Otter cafes are becoming increasingly popular, especially in Japan, and this has increased poaching by the illegal wildlife trade. Did you know that Asian small-clawed otters are amongst the few mammals that are monogamous? The parents remain Alpha which means their offspring do not leave them to breed like smooth-coated otters, their close relatives. This means that the parents or one parent are usually killed in order to get the weaned offspring to sell, leaving the unweaned pups to die as there are no female siblings that can nurse them.
