What's In My Hospital Bag for Baby #2 (and what you really DON'T need)
What's in my hospital bag for baby #2... or more importantly, what's NOT. The first time around, I literally had nothing packed. Very unprepared. But the good news is, now I know exactly what you can totally go without at the hospital, what they will provide for you, and what little comforts would have been nice to have. So, here's everything that you need for labor and delivery:
For baby:
- you'll need swaddles, a picture-taking outfit, and something to go home from the hospital in that has legs so you can put them in their car seat properly
- if you have certain brands of baby supplies that you're passionate about using, you can bring them, but the hospital will supply them with safe soap, shampoo, and lotion
- a lovey, if you'd like, especially if you're coming home to another baby or dog and want to give them something with their smell on it
For mama, you DEFINITELY need:
- a wide variety of clothes. because you will get gross, and you'll want to change a lot and feel fresh!
- lotion, chapstick, and a long phone charger. most people recommended 6-10 feet. my hospital bed had a charging port on it, so I didn't feel like I needed one that long, but I make no guarantees.
- disposable travel toiletries and tooth brushes. don't say you'll grab it on the way out the door. you won't.
- non-slip or compression socks. or both.
What you probably don't need:
- your breast pump. unless you're planning on exclusively pumping and you just want your lactation consultant to give you a hand. but they have high efficiency pumps there if you really need them, and if you love it, you can usually rent those until you get yours in.
- your pregnancy pillow, or other bulky comforts. it's just not necessary, and not something I would want to lug all the way to the hospital and back. just ask for extra pillows in the postpartum suite and they'll take care of you.
- shoes. your feet and legs will likely be even more swollen after labor than they were in your last trimester. slippers and compression socks are the move.
- diapers and wipes. seriously, y'all. not even adult diapers. they will give you EVERYTHING. and postpartum supplies, too.
What you might like:
- little luxuries. focus on the things that make you feel supported and comfortable, but that won't take up as much room. for me, that's compression leggings for going home in, makeup, and a face mask.
- your laptop and charger. I didn't go to the hospital soon enough to need this beforehand, but I wish we had it after for the postpartum suite to watch netflix.
