Yes, it's possible to grow monte carlo without CO2 Injection. The result isn't as dense nor as fast as with CO2 injection, but it's possible. The secret is just normal dirted tank with adequate lighting. I had several test tanks with any other water parameters and substrate and all were working as long as the lighting is correct, not too dim nor too bright.
