Let's play MOTHER 3, part 20: The End and Lots of Tears

We did it. And we cried a lot. Pretty much nonstop. As with previous games, I hid chat during the endgame section so I could just focus on the game and not worry about entertaining the audience or seeing spoilers ... so basically it's ten minutes or so (maybe longer) of me crying a whole lot and not saying very much. I don't know if that's fun to watch or not, but I was enjoying myself, in a painful way. We love stories that make us hurt, don't we?

Also, before I forget. "No Problem Here" shirt preorders:

I have a lot of thoughts about MOTHER 3 and its ending, and I kind of go into some of them after the credits rolled here. I love the story of Flint's family and how much they love each other, and that is unquestionably the heart of the game. There are other good characters and some interesting plot moments, but those get kind of put aside to focus on the central family and their conflicts and losses. I think it's kind of a shame that the rest of the game just disappears because I did really like Duster and I was really interested in the Magypsies, but I love Flint and his family and their story was well-told and painful and yet full of such powerful love that it moved me.

Pokey/Porky continues to be a tragic character, through til the end. I hope we can all pity him, which does not mean condoning the terrible things he does. The horrible thing about his ending is that it is terrifying, absolutely /terrifying/ to me, and yet I can't think of a better solution. And maybe this way he will finally be able to rest, at least.

I wanted a little more closure or explanation or story or development or *something* at the end, but I have to recognize that that's not what Itoi is doing here.

As far as I can tell, Itoi was trying to do two things:
1) Tell a beautiful, tragic story that illustrates the love of a tight-knit family
2) Implore the player to make the world a better place, even in small ways, no matter what the odds seem like

So I think everything else isn't really important and is treated thus over the course of the game. It's weird, though, because in some ways it's like the inverse of Earthbound ... which was all about the feeling and the world and the fable of the adventure, but which had fairly flat characters. In MOTHER 3, the world and plot don't have much to them, but some of the characters have great depth.
