I’m sure most of us know what it means to be a twin. Medically speaking, a twin is conceived when a mother gives birth to two children within a very short amount of time. These two children would have grown in the same womb and often share the same birthdate. When we think about twins, oftentimes the first image that comes to mind is two people who look almost identical - but that isn’t always the case. Sometimes, twins can look vastly different and lead completely different lives. Genetically speaking, it can also be very difficult to separate two twins from one another as their genetic makeup is so strikingly similar. In the case of identical twins, they often are born of the same egg that has divided itself into the earliest stages of pregnancy. This means their genetics are almost identical. However, in the case of dizygotic twins, the children can look considerably different, yet still, be considered twins.
