SLS vs Starship: Cost, Payload Mass & Launch Frequency
SpaceX has just been selected into NASA's commercial lunar program for sending humans back to the Moon by 2024! So has NASA finally recognized that they can't progress their Artemis program further without SpaceX's help? For us this is the perfect occasion for a thorough SLS vs Starship comparison!
------------------------- NAVIGATION THROUGH THE VIDEO: -------------------------
1:33 A launch with NASA's SLS (Space Launch System) would cost 1.5-2 billion USD, but the US senators still insistent on SLS for the Artemis and Europa Clipper Missions. Hence instead of switching to cheaper commercial launch vehicles, NASA has to request an additional $2.3 billion despite being already over-budget with the Artemis program.
5:21 On the other hand, SpaceX's Super Heavy / Starship system would only cost 2 million USD per launch, has far greater payload capacity thanks to orbital SpaceX Starship refueling, and has a planned Starship launch schedule of 3 times per day. Hence we really have a clear winner for our NASA SLS vs. SpaceX Starship contest!
7:35 We have to clarify our opinion on NASA's Lunar Gateway: a Starship Moon base is for sure the better way to colonize the Moon, but in view of NASA's restrictions due to politicians, having a Lunar Gateway is better than nothing.
9:21 SpaceX has just been chosen into NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative for providing launch vehicles and/or lunar landers for the 2024 Moon mission. We're glad to see more NASA and SpaceX collaboration and really hope to witness SpaceX Starship landing on the Moon and also Starship landing on Mars.
11:44 The Chinese also have growing Moon & Mars ambitions. They're currently testing a new Mars lander which is scheduled to be sent to Mars already next year.
