1940s Webster Chicago Wire Recorder Guitar Amp Conversion (PART 1)

In this 2-part video series we will look at a 1948 Webster Chicago Model 7 Wire recorder I picked up recently at an antique mall. The model 7 was similar to the later models 81 and 181. The amplifier within the recorder was a SE 6V6 output with a 6X5 rectifier, and 6SJ7 and 6SN7 preamp ,which should make for a lovely-sounding guitar amplifier. It also featured a 6E5 magic eye tube or monitoring output signal strength.

Webster Chicago were developers of existing wire recording technology, bringing some of the first commercial units to the market just after WWII, and they were THE major player in that market. By the mid-1950s however, magnetic tape technology had begun to take over and Webster Chicago changed their name to Webcor, continuing to produce tape machines and phonographs.
