Intricate sand patterns bring the beauty of India to Taiwan at the hand of artist|Taiwan News

For six years now, Vandana Mengane has been promoting Indian arts and culture in Taiwan. The engineer-turned artist practices many art forms including, rangoli, which involves creating intricate patterns out of sand on the floor. She also creates works inspired by the beauty of Taiwan, holding exhibitions to showcase the beauty of her home country and her home away from home. Let’s take a look.

Indian artist Vandana Mengane places sand in different colors on the ground to create beautiful and intricate patterns.

This is a traditional ground painting art called rangoli. It is a folk art that first began in the Indian subcontinent, and is still practiced today.

Traditionally, we used to make rangoli with the rice flour, but now it is made of white sand and the different color of sand. You see this color pattern is from the north where most of the colors are mixed within the Rangoli and presented. Mostly in front of the door to welcome the guests or in front of the God.

Before moving to Taiwan, Mengane was an engineer in India. She has been fond of painting and handicrafts since she was a child. Because of her husband’s job, she moved to Taiwan in 2017. She holds exhibitions and teaches various Indian art forms in Taiwan. For this series of works, she drew auspicious symbols signifying happiness, purity and health among others.

The materials used in these paintings are of course, acrylic and oil colors. All these symbols are created using clay which is white stoned clay. They’re easily available in Taiwan. I try to create the patterns separately and try to merge it along with the canvas to display.

Many of her works are also inspired by Taiwan’s beautiful scenery and landmarks, such as Taipei 101 or the Miramar Ferris wheel.

I just love this country. I have had a very beautiful time for the last six years. I am looking forward to a few more years to spend here. My art journey became deeper after coming to Taiwan. The goal if you say,is to of course spread Indian art forms which are not known. I would like to make it more known to the Taiwanese and to the world.

Having lived in Taiwan for six years, Mengane considers Taiwan her second home. She hopes to let more people understand Indian art forms and the beauty of Taiwan.
