Here’s what you need to know about spring cleaning the chicken coop!👇🏼✨🐓

I do these deeper cleanings 1-2 times per year—spring is a must, and fall depending on how diligent I’ve been at cleaning through summer.

I also change bedding seasonally: once in summer and again in winter.

Side story: This past year I tested a LOT of coop substrates. I started with coffee, moved to coconut litter, helped test dustless sand early last fall, switched to PDZ in winter, and even tried hemp bedding!

All this testing was done so I could give you my honest (and unpaid) feedback on the best coop substrates. It’s one of the biggest questions I get, afterall. Full article coming soon! 👀

Back to cleaning! The process looks intense but it’s actually therapeutic for me, and rewarding when it’s done!

Here’s what makes coop cleaning more manageable:

💚 Walk-in coop design = easier access and maintenance
💚 Wipeable surfaces (that wallpapered back wall is so much easier to clean!)
💚 Removable roosting bars
💚 Siftable bedding
💚 The right tools for the job (shop vac, tub brush, vinegar spray, Coop Scoop)

New to chicken keeping? I’ve created a Clean Coop Checklist with seasonal, monthly, weekly, and daily tasks, plus links to all my favorite tools and substrates!
