The Blue-Bay, the Diet-Smurf, the Cookiemonster, Snowflake II – Whatever it’s going to be called, it’s finally here!

Tudor launched the Tudor Black Bay 58 (Fifty-Eight) Blue on 1st July 2020. This is a much-anticipated and highly-leaked addition to their Black Bay 58 line – the blue reference 79030B-001. The Black Bay 58 was originally launched at Baselworld in 2018 – much to the elation of watch fans everywhere who favour a more classically sized dive watch, with a sensational 39mm case diameter. Objectively, the Black Bay 58 is most likely the best value watch currently on the market considering its quality of finish, in-house production, iconic aesthetic and rich heritage. Since 2018, the watch has only been available in it’s gilt and black colourway, faithful to the 1958 reference 7924 on which the BB58 is named after and heavily inspired by stylistically.

The new B-001 features a blue dial and bezel with silver applied indices, white lume-spots and a white minute track and lettering – a charming refresh that presents a fairly different look to that of the original BB58. The new addition is just a cosmetic change, meaning the B-001 features the same 39mm case, 200m of water resistance, COSC-certified in-house movement, 70-hour power reserve, faux-riveted bracelet and unguarded crown as the black BB58.

What seems to have been overlooked in the hype of this new Tudor is the important connection this watch has to the well-loved Tudor ‘Snowflake’ from the 1970s. While we will likely never see a true reissue with an oyster case, square indices and a triangle covering the bezel lume pip, what Tudor have released today is more like the original reference 9401 than first impressions suggest. The obvious connection is in the blue colouring, but also the Shield logo, the snowflake hands, it’s case size, the triangle indice at 12 o’clock and it’s lack of a date complication.

P01 aside, Tudor haven’t put a foot wrong since their re-birth in 2010; they remain the luxury brand that offers quality original watches, affordably – just as Wilsdorf intended. The Blue BB58 will be available in ADs from today and will no-doubt be hot property over the coming months and years.
