Enduring Activity: Suicide Prevention Symposium

Target Audience
This activity is targeted toward family practitioners, internal medicine, emergency medicine, advance practice providers, social workers and other providers in all specialties.

Statement of Need
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States. It was responsible for nearly 46,000 deaths in 2020 (source:
https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/index.html). Suicide is a serious public health problem that can have long-lasting effects on individuals, families, and communities. The good news is that suicide is preventable. Preventing suicide requires strategies at all levels of society. This includes prevention and protective strategies for individuals, families, and communities. Everyone can help prevent suicide by learning the warning signs, promoting prevention and resilience, and committing to social change (source: https://www.cdc.gov/suicide/prevention/index.html).

Objectives
At the conclusion of this offering, the participant will be able to:
• Examine the prevalence of suicide.
• Review risk factors that contribute to suicide.
• Recognize how protective factors, such as self-care and resiliency, can aid in suicide prevention (or protect against suicide risk).
• Identify systems of care, evidence-informed approaches, and best practices to reduce suicide rates.
• Discuss ethical legal considerations in caring for patients and healthcare workers who are suicidal.
• Describe how chronic toxic stress and secondary traumatic stress can potentially increase the incidence of suicide among healthcare professionals.
• Develop a confidential and standardized pathway to care for healthcare professionals at risk of suicide that addresses screening, assessing, safety planning, referrals, and follow-up.
