CLARK GABLE NEVER OPENED HER CLOSET AGAIN — THE TRUTH ABOUT CAROLE LOMBARD
On the evening of January 16, 1942, a twin-engine airliner climbed out of the Las Vegas desert and turned onto a heading that was just four degrees off course. Twelve minutes later, it struck the side of Potosi Mountain. All 22 people on board were killed instantly. One of them was Carole Lombard — the highest-paid actress in Hollywood, the wife of Clark Gable, and the very first American celebrity to die in service of the war effort.
She was 33 years old. She was on her way home.
In this carefully researched documentary, we tell the full story of Carole Lombard's extraordinary life and her tragic final journey — and we tell it honestly. We follow her from a small town in Indiana, through the windshield accident that nearly ended her career at 17, through her marriages to William Powell and Clark Gable, through the most successful comedies of the 1930s, and into the war bond rally in Indianapolis that raised more than two million dollars in a single afternoon.
We also explore what Clark Gable did with the eighteen years he had left after she was gone — the war service, the heavy drinking, the bedroom he never disturbed, and the crypt at Forest Lawn he purchased in 1942 and waited a lifetime to use.
📚 ABOUT THIS DOCUMENTARY
This story is based on the analysis of multiple historical sources — biographies, contemporaneous newspaper reporting, the Civil Aeronautics Board accident report, Treasury Department records, and the memoirs of those who knew Carole and Clark personally. As part of our research, we carefully separate popular Hollywood myths from documented facts. Where a famous claim (such as the legendary Göring "bounty") cannot be verified, we say so honestly.
Some dialogue and intimate scenes have been respectfully reconstructed based on historical documents, eyewitness accounts, letters, interviews, and the recollections of family members and friends. These reconstructions are presented as illustrative — to help bring the era to life — and not as verbatim quotation.
We invite our viewers, especially those of you who remember this golden age of Hollywood firsthand, to share your own memories and thoughts in the comments. Did your family own a war bond? Do you remember seeing Carole Lombard on screen? We read every comment.
