Eliminated: OpenAI ChatGPT Developer Found Dead
We’ve all heard chilling tales of Boeing whistleblowers taking their own lives. From Russia, we see enemies of Putin mysteriously falling from balconies. And now, there's this shocking news. Suchir Balaji, a former OpenAI employee and whistleblower, was recently found dead in his San Francisco apartment, an apparent suicide. After nearly four years at OpenAI, Balaji walked away when he realized the technology posed more danger than benefit to society.
First responders arrived for a wellness check, only to discover the lifeless body of a male. Their initial investigation found no signs of foul play. The medical examiner had already informed Balaji's family before going to the press. Now, here comes the twist that conspiracy theorists will love: just a day before his body was found, a court document named Balaji in a copyright lawsuit against OpenAI. In an attempt to smooth things over, OpenAI began digging into Balaji's custodial files related to the copyright disputes he had raised. A spokesperson for OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, expressed, "We are devastated to learn of this incredibly sad news today and our hearts go out to Suchir's loved ones during this difficult time." Balaji resigned from OpenAI in August after four years as an Artificial Intelligence Researcher. In several interviews, he revealed that he decided to leave after concluding OpenAI had allegedly breached copyright laws in its AI development. He argued that OpenAI was harming the internet and claimed ChatGPT was detrimental to society. Balaji stated, "If you believe what I believe, you have to just leave the company."
In a post shared on X in October, he reflected, "I was at OpenAI for nearly four years and worked on ChatGPT for the last 1.5 of them. I initially didn't know much about copyright, fair use, etc., but became curious after seeing all the lawsuits filed against GenAI companies." He elaborated, "As I sought to understand the issue better, I ultimately concluded that fair use seems like a pretty implausible defense for many generative AI products, mainly because they create substitutes that compete with the data they're trained on." OpenAI and Microsoft are embroiled in a legal frenzy with various newspapers and media publishers, including the New York Times, waving their copyright flags, accusing the generative AI startup of stepping on legal toes. Balaji declared that OpenAI and ChatGPT were bad for society, and the very next day, he is found dead... nothing suspicious there.
