Tree Planting in Greenland

Our forests in South Greenland are something completely sacred for us, and very unique for the whole country. Today the forests have become tourist attractions and a shared source of enjoyment for all in South Greenland.

This short film gives a look into how these forests came to be over the last 70 years, driven primarily by Poul Bjerge.

We released this film on 5 May 2021, on Poul's 92nd birthday. It was a lovely day for him surrounded by loving family and friends.

Poul Bjerge was born in Nuuk in 1929. He spoke Greenlandic fluently when he went to Denmark with his family in 1940 at the age of 11. He always had the wish of coming home to Greenland.

68 years ago, in 1953, Poul came home to Greenland after having been away for 13 years; he was 24 years old and newly educated as a forrester. He came back, in part, to plant trees. He settled in Upernaviarsuk and started his family with his wife Bibe. He lived a long life there working with agriculture, growing vegetables and planting trees.

The full one hour long interview (in Danish) can be heard on the "Kujataa - World Heritage" spotify channel.
