The Story of the 300 of Naples and of the Gleaning Girl

A sad but fascinating story of how Carlo Pisacane led an expedition against the Kingdom of Naples in 1857 with the objective of starting a revolution and remove the King. It was an unavoidable failure. Underfinanced and poorly organized, Pisacane's men included many common criminals who were rapidly dispersed and captured by the Neapolitan troops. Pisacane himself was killed, or may have committed suicide. The story is still well known today in Italy for having inspired a poem by Luigi Mercantini who created the story of a "gleaning girl" meeting the men of the expedition and referring to Pisacane as "handsome captain." Mercantini's girl was purely fictional, but he may have been inspired by a real story of a gleaning girl named Rosa Perrotta who was raped and killed by the unruly members of Pisacane's expedition
