Drifting is our default setting. All we have to do to drift, is nothing.

Most things and relationships and destiny go off course because we did not look up to check our personal markers, and before we knew it we drifted.

HEBREWS 2:1-4 ADDRESSES THE ISSUE OF DRIFTING

Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who had converted from Judaism and were being persecuted. They were losing heart, confidence, and hope, and wanted to go back to Judaism where they would be accepted and more comfortable.

Against this backdrop, the writer to the Hebrews is saying hang in there.

HEBREWS 1 IS ABOUT THE SUPREMACY OF CHRIST
This chapter establishes his pre-eminence and greatness, his supreme rule over all things

In light of chapter 1, chapter 2 starts:

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. Hebrews 2:1
PAY MUCH CLOSER ATTENTION

The more familiar we get the less we pay attention. We can take things for granted and miss the awe of our salvation.

To go with the changing currents and winds of this age is easy. But we are most susceptible to drift in pain, pressure, or comfort.

JESUS ALONE IS OUR ANCHOR

Hebrews 6:19

Jesus is our hope and our anchor. Not people, not position, not possessions.

Hebrews 13:8

In a changing world Jesus does not change. Winds and currents shift but Jesus remains the same. He is our anchor.

SIGNS OF DRIFTING
Drifting from Christ is hardly noticeable. It looks like small compromises over a long time that cause us to drift.

WE KNOW WE HAVE DRIFTED WHEN:

1. WE STOP RESTING AND WE START STRIVING

Hebrews 4:11

The enemy wants us to live in chaos, disease, stress, anxiety, depression. He wants to undermine the character and nature of God. He wants us to carry the weights and burdens.

So many of our ailments are rooted in unbelief.

We cannot complete a completed work. We cannot finish a finished work. We cannot defeat a defeated devil. Jesus has done it all.

God is good and does good, and he is working all things together for our good and his glory

When we stop resting in the love of God we start striving in our flesh. We get exhausted, depleted, overwhelmed and drift.

2. WE STOP WORKING AND START WATCHING

Rest does not mean we cease from all activity. We have been given a job to do on this earth. We are to go into the world and make disciples, and we are to do this in Gods strength not ours.

We need to stop scrolling and start living.

We need to stop being in everyone else’s business and be about the Father’s business.

John 15:8

Ephesians 2:10

1 Corinthians 15:58

3. WHEN WE STOP PRESSING AND START COASTING

Phil 3:14

Even a dead fish can flow downstream. You can be in church but no longer pressing. You can be reading the bible but no longer pressing. You can be going with the flow of culture and not pressing against it. You can stop obeying and start compromising. We can stop following and start settling. You can stop changing and accept your lot in life. You can stop believing God and start resigning yourself.. When we stop pressing we simply drift into complacency.

4. WHEN WE STOP GATHERING AND START ISOLATING

Hebrews 10:23-25

The Jewish Christians had stopped gathering because of fear. We need to not bow down to an anti church spirit. Get into a life giving local church. The devil wants to isolate us. It is hard to protect your heart and mind when isolated.

We need each other. We need to stir each other up to church. What are your personal markers to miss church? Lets not just download sermons we want to hear from preachers we like.

7. WHEN WE STOP ENDURING AND START YIELDING
Endure:
-The power to withstand pain and hardship
-The ability to continue despite fatigue/stress/adversity
-The ability to bear up under

The Hebrews 11 heroes of faith did not drift even when they did not see the promise. They were martyred but endured to the end. They stayed faithful despite the hardship. They did not give in to sin, defeat, or unbelief.

Jesus Christ did not get mission drift- he endured.

Because he endured, on the third day he rose again, defeating hell and death and making a way for us where there is no way.

The same Spirit that raised him from the dead lives in us. You have the supernatural ability of God to endure. Whatever you are going through he is with you
