So you want to buy a new or used watch from Audemars Piguet, one of my favorite Swiss luxury watch brands on the planet. Here are 5 important things you should look at when making a decision on your next AP purchase:
1) Choose the right AP model - Even though Audemars Piguet has different lines within the AP brand, the go-to line for me is the Royal Oak. Within this line, you have the Royal Oak (RO) and Royal Oak Offshore, both great lines that include watches that tend to hold their value over time. Make sure to use what you like and the right size (not everyone would feel comfortable with the 44mm Offshore; some prefer a 42mm Royal Oak).
2) Buy an AP in the right condition - Condition is one of the most important things when buying an AP watch. Make sure that the watch has been polished correctly and is crisp and sharp.
3) Don't go too old on an Audemars. In general, do not go older than an F serial (preferably G, H or higher, which means newer. Obviously when dealing with vintage AP watches, this does not apply.
4) Box and Papers - The box and papers when it comes to an AP watch can cost total from between $600 to $1,000. Obviously is better to have them, but not having them is not a deal killer. There are ways to get them from the manufacturer if you so desire. At the end of the day, the price of your AP watch is more important (see 5 below).
5) Price is Key - To me, price and condition are the most important things (assuming that I'm buying a good model). Make sure that you're paying the right price.
