Matt Canavan and Basil Zempilas clash on US extradition demands

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan has clashed with Perth Mayor Basil Zempilas while expressing his “outrage” over Julian Assange’s extradition order.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has fought against his extradition from the UK to the US for over a decade which Mr Canavan says is an effort from America to “protect the misdeeds they presided over during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars”.

“He’s not a US citizen – what gives the US the right to come and demand other people in other countries be extradited to their nation because they have released information about their government,” he asked Sky News host Sharri Markson.

Mr Zempilas chimed in to ask "what if an American citizen was leaking our state secrets and they were in the United States and our government wanted to get them back"?

“I reckon there is zero chance America would extradite them to Australia – zero chance,” Mr Canavan responded.

“Okay, but you can ask the question, can’t you?” Mr Zempilas finished with.
