E30: More Ethanol In Petrol Clear Govt Policy. What about my old Petrol cars?
From a policy perspective, ethanol blending has become one of the government’s key long term energy strategies. Officials argue that increasing ethanol content in petrol can gradually reduce India’s massive crude oil import bill. Even a small increase in blending percentage translates into lower dependence on imported oil. The government also maintains that higher ethanol blending can help reduce vehicle emissions while creating additional support for the domestic sugarcane and agriculture sectors.
The timing of this push is significant. Fuel prices have been rising across the country, and India still imports nearly 85% of its crude oil requirements, much of it linked to vulnerable global supply routes. In that backdrop, the ethanol roadmap is clearly being positioned as both an economic and strategic policy shift.
India has already achieved its earlier target of 20% ethanol blending ahead of schedule, which is why discussions are now moving beyond E20 toward higher blends like E27, E30, and even E85. That would mean petrol containing up to 85% ethanol and only 15% conventional petrol. However, several critical questions still remain unanswered especially around vehicle compatibility, fuel distribution systems, engine safety, and whether separate fuel nozzles or infrastructure changes would be required.
For now, the government has only notified fuel standards through the Bureau of Indian Standards. The actual rollout is still dependent on technical assessments by automotive and petroleum agencies regarding supply chains, fuel stations, and the readiness of existing vehicles. So while the direction of policy is becoming increasingly clear, implementation is still at a relatively early stage.
