Lake, Smit & Partners | CT Guided Microwave Ablation

A microwave ablation is a treatment option that uses image guidance to place a probe needle through the skin into a liver tumour. Microwaves are generated around the needle tip to create a targeted volume of heat in and immediately adjacent to the tumour. The heat created destroys the liver cancer cells.

Microwave ablation is an effective treatment option. The treatment is typically performed on an outpatient basis or may require a short hospital stay.

This treatment option can be considered in the following situations:
- Patient has other medical conditions making surgery high risk
- Patient is not a good candidate for surgery as surgical access to the tumour is too difficult
- Liver tumours that have not responded to chemotherapy or have recurred following surgical removal
- For multiple small tumours that are spread out in the liver
- Commonest use is in colorectal liver metastases under 3.5 cm in size

The success rate for completely eliminating liver tumours is 85 percent.

Here is a video illustrating how this procedure is undertaken…
