Balance Tips For Motorcycle Riders - How To Use Your Bodyweight To Steady Your Bike Off-Road

These balance tips for motorcycle riders aim to assist the off-road ADV motorcycle rider in active balnce techniques.

What is Active Balance For Off-Road Motorcycling, you ask? It is the constant adjustments that we must make in body position to compensate for the ever changing terrain offered to us during off-road riding.

Its all too common to see inexperienced off-road adventure motorcycle riders gripping the handlebars with all of their might, with tight shoulders, rigid torso and wide knees. This body posture restricts the ability to actively flow one's body with the terrain and with the bike to stay balanced and keep riding.

The preferred riding posture that allows ease of body movement, confident balance and the ability to react properly to surprises on your route, is what we call "Active Balance". Being reflexive in body positions for counterbalancing the bike as it moves around underneath the rider in off-road conditions is vital in keeping the bike online and preserving momentum.

This video will review a few key components of Active Balance and use our Omega Course as practice grounds.

This sequence of bike exercises is designed to develop active balance motor skills needed for adventure motorcycling for maintaining the bike’s balance as it is in motion.
Ω: But don't worry, unlike the last letter of the Greek alphabet, this will not be our final agility course, however this series of U-turns will help you develop active balance skillz.

Disclaimer:

These agility courses/exercises are designed to help develop the fundamental riding skills of clutch, throttle, brake and active balance by the rider.

Precise practice in coordinating these techniques can lead to instinctive/reflexive actions by the rider and allow for more precise control of the motorcycle.

Mastery of these techniques allows the rider to more smoothly transition the bike when cornering as well as being able to react reflexively when encountering unexpected changes in surface traction in off road conditions.

Depending on your skill level, you may want to make the courses larger to feel more comfortable while you develop these skills.

Performing these exercises carries a risk of dropping your motorcycle which may result in damage to you or your motorcycle. Always be sure that your bike has the proper crash guards and that you also wear the appropriate protective gear.

All exercises require the coordination of the friction zone, throttle control, dragging the rear brake, turning the bike at slow speed and active balance by the rider.

Developing these low speed riding techniques allows the rider to more smoothly transition the bike when cornering as well as being able to react reflexively when encountering unexpected changes in surface traction in off road conditions.
