Sunk by a Former Ally #navalhistory #ww2 #historyshorts #battleship #facts #shorts

In September 1943, the Italian battleship Italian battleship Roma met a shocking fate during World War II.

After Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, the Italian fleet began sailing to surrender. But German forces, once Italy’s wartime allies, moved quickly to stop them.

German aircraft attacked the fleet using the revolutionary Fritz X radio-guided bomb — one of the first precision-guided weapons used in combat.

Two direct hits struck Roma, triggering a catastrophic explosion that broke the battleship apart and sank her in the Mediterranean. Over 1,300 sailors were lost, including fleet commander Carlo Bergamini.

Roma’s destruction remains one of the most dramatic moments of the war — when a former ally became the deadliest enemy. ⚓
