Your GPS Uses Einstein's Relativity (Here Is How)

Every time you open Google Maps, you are using Einstein's relativity. GPS satellites carry atomic clocks 20,000 km up. Special relativity (their speed) slows their clocks by 7 microseconds a day, but general relativity (weaker gravity) speeds them up by 45 microseconds a day. The net is 38 microseconds fast every day, which works out to 11 km of position drift. So engineers tune the clocks to tick wrong on Earth and exactly right in orbit. Relativity is not science fiction, it is load-bearing infrastructure in your pocket.
