Silent Hill 2. Few names in gaming's history provoke so many positive connotations. This often lauded survival horror classic by Team Silent and Konami features a story, mood, and setting that have become so iconic than anything remotely resembling them almost feels like theft of intellectual property. And in the video essay space, these characteristics have been extolled to millions of views but I have to admit, as great as all the insight can be, a lot of these analyses run together for me after a bit, often being plot summaries or just anecdotes from yet another emo American kid about how meaningful James Sunderland's psychological odyssey was.
So I wanted to do something a little different, a little experimental in my analysis of this beloved survival horror classic, and that is talking about what we're told not to talk about: religion or politics. Politics are no fun, but religion? Religion's my jam and Silent Hill 2 is quite the jam session, despite not being an overtly religious game on its face. But that's why I'm here today: to draw your attention to all the Biblical references the game makes, why they're important, and how smartly integrated they are as storytelling devices.
