Unlike what I thought that parents are always pushing children to get married. Some of them were leftover women in the old time. Some of them are against gender inequality and support leftover women. However, they compromised because of much severer familism and hypergamy at the time. In contrast, young women become more and more powerful at the same time. Less and less of them are willing to give up their career and spend the whole life staying at home taking care of the household. According to She Ying, one of the interviewees, many females request one of their kids to have the family name of themselves. When father-son dyad is not being the axis of family relationships anymore, the steadiness of familism rooted in Chinese culture starts to be shaken.

Age is not the only standard considered for marriage. Ownership of house property and being local people are also the requests from many parents. When one-child policy restricted the last generation, they want to keep the only child around and focus on them all the time. When the obsessiveness of house property press young people and they can’t afford it, parents offer financial support and more control of children’s life. In the meantime, it also causes the burden of house property moving to men. Gender inequality still exists everywhere nowadays and it is also harmful to men. For women from small towns, it is so difficult for them to choose husbands only from local people possessing house property.

The old generation grew up within the traditional culture and experienced the flying of the economy as well as collision with modern culture. They are supposed to take off the burden of the household after so many years. However, when young females refuse the burden of household, they tend to take over the responsibility of taking care of grandchildren and even doing all the housework. After growing up under pressure, they choose to go back.

The one-child policy has become the past. The young generation grows up in modern culture and pursues gender equality bravely. Familism is shaken day by day. Leftover women, the conflict discourse, uniquely severe presented between current two particular current generations.
