The Gloria Films – Three approaches to psychotherapy – All Three sessions 1965
In this stunning film, we see the therapeutic work of three titans: Carl Rogers, Frederick (Fritz) Perls and Albert Ellis, with real client Gloria.
As we see in the case of Mentalization-based treatment, there is no reasonable reason that common factors should not be effectively incorporated into clinical theory, thus shifting these factors from an untheorized state into deliberately applied techniques or evaluative criteria. An example would be therapist empathy, which is widely regarded as a common factor. But even empathy can be theorized as a helpful curative technique, applied and modulated responsively in any given case.
The client in this film was Gloria Szymanski. She was 31 years old when the sessions were filmed; she had been through a divorce six years earlier, and her daughter, Pammy, was in the fourth grade at the time Gloria married again in 1968, and divorced ten years later. She died of leukemia at the age of 46. Gloria’s daughter, Pamela Burry, later published a book entitled, “Living with the Gloria Films, A daughter’s memory”.
After these three consulting sessions, Gloria chose Perls as her therapist. However, after being his client for years, she interestingly said she felt retraumatized.
An amazing masterpiece by director Dr. Shostrom from 1965 that all psychotherapists (IMAO) should know backwards – and forwards as well.
