🏡 One of the most common VA loan questions I hear from Veterans is this: Should I put money down, or keep my cash?

Yes, you can put money down on a VA loan, but if you have full VA entitlement, you are not required to. So why do some Veterans still do it anyway?

Let’s break down the biggest myths.

❌ Myth 1: A down payment dramatically lowers my monthly payment
On a $400,000 VA loan at 6%, putting 5% down saves roughly $124 per month. That comes at the cost of $20,000 out of pocket. For most buyers, that tradeoff is not a game-changer.

❌ Myth 2: I’ll get a much better interest rate
Usually, nope. VA purchase rates are already some of the best in the market. In certain edge cases, putting money down can help an automated underwriting system approve a loan that was not passing at zero down, but that is the exception, not the rule.

There are times when a down payment is required or makes sense. Buying with a Non-Veteran co-borrower, using partial VA entitlement, or needing to strengthen an approval are a few examples.

For most Veterans, holding onto cash is often the smarter move.

That money can be used to cover closing costs if the seller will not, provide liquidity for moving expenses, furniture, and repairs, or stay available for emergencies, savings, or investing. Cash flexibility matters, especially right after you buy a home.

The right answer is not always zero down or money down. It is about strategy, not rules of thumb.
