Hunting for Old Tech at My Parents’ House (for Digital Minimalism)
I went searching for old tech at my parents’ house to see if anything could be used as tools for digital minimalism. Since getting into digital minimalism, I have slowly been incorporating simpler/older tech to replace tools I once had on a smartphone (such as my Nokia 3310 dumbphone). Smartphones can be considered convergent technology because they combine a bunch of technologies/tools into one device. And that sounds convenient, but it also comes with the downside of being very distracting and time consuming as all the tools demand time and attention at once (which makes me feel the effects of digital burnout). De-centralizing a smartphone into simpler and more “divergent” technologies has helped me be able to choose what I want to give my time and attention to and when, and has also helped me generally spend less time online. Old tech has been a great resource for digital minimalism for me because it tends to do just one thing and often isn’t connected to the internet. I also mentioned how I plan to incorporate these into my everyday carry (EDC) with my dumbphone.
Although I found a good collection of old tech, the ones that I think have the greatest potential are the ipods, the digital camera, the CDs, and the Palm Pixi phones (although still not sure if these work). The ipods shown are the 3G ipod nano, 2G ipod nano, and iPod touch. Other devices I show in this video: Video8 Sony Handycam, CD/tape player, film camera, landline phone, and CDs.
These items can be thrifted, found at garage sales, in old drawers of family or friends, or on Ebay (or other second hand platforms).
