Traveling to Europe? Don't Make This €300 Mistake ❌

**UPDATE: local opposition seems to have delayed this new day-tripper tax as of Feb 2023, but keep checking to be sure it hasn't been implemented when you visit**

Starting in 2023, Venice, Italy will start charging day-tripping tourists a fee to enter the city. Not paying this fee could result in a 300 euro fine. Venice officials are working on creating a website to book and pay the tax in advance. How they will enforce the tax is yet to be seen.

This new day tourist tax will be implemented, charging a tax to each traveler to enter the city for the day.

The website https://veneziaautentica.com/venice-tourist-tax states the tax amount may change depending on the number of expected tourists that day. The more tourists, the higher the tax. This is meant to discourage the large traffic Venice sees on any given day.

"There are a total of 4 different scenarios and taxes:

A fixed 3 euro/person tax when very few people are expected to visit the city – Green Light
A fixed 6 euro/person tax on a normal day – Yellow Light
A fixed 8 euro/person tax when an excessive number of people are expected to visit the city – Red Light
A fixed 10 euro/person tax when an overwhelming number of people is expected to visit the city – Black Light."

Since 2011, tourists staying overnight in Venice have already been paying a tax from 1 to 5 euro each night of your stay, up to 5 days. No tax is charged from day 6 and on. You will not be charged both overnight and day-tripper tax. It should be one or the other.
