Cyclone Nivar: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh & Puducherry To Witness Heavy Rainfall Today

The process of severe cyclonic storm Nivar making landfall on the coasts of Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh began around 11 pm Wednesday. According to the IMD, the centre of the cyclone passed through Puducherry around midnight with a wind speed of 120-130 kmph gusting to 145 kmph around 2.30 am. Gates of the Chembarambakkam Lake in Chennai have been opened for the first time since 2015 as water levels in the reservoir rose on Wednesday amid torrential rainfall. Severe cyclonic storm Nivar developed over the Bay of Bengal and is moving in a west-northwest direction. The Indian Navy has deployed INS Jyoti along with flood relief and diving teams in parts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry to avoid any untoward incident. The NDRF has deployed 30 teams across the three states, while 20 more teams have been kept on standby for immediate deployment. Authorities concerned have been asked by the NCMC to ensure zero casualties and early restoration of normalcy in the 15 districts across the three states which are likely to be affected.
