The Royal Navy could be used to ensure vital fuel reaches Scunthorpe’s blast furnaces, after MPs passed emergency laws to take control of British Steel from its Chinese owners.
The Ministry of Defence said no decision had been made, but the move is under serious consideration to prevent the shipment being diverted.
Parliament was recalled for a rare Saturday sitting, rushing the bill through both houses. King Charles gave it Royal Assent by nightfall, allowing Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds to take charge before the furnaces shut down.
