'Noot breekt wet' is an ode to the resilience of the oppressed person and to the power of music; possibly the last form of expression that survives when words no longer suffice and all other critical voices have been silenced.
With the philosophical works of Hannah Arendt as a point of reference, Andrea and Blake present how composers lived and worked under the main totalitarian regimes of the twentienth century.
A pledoyer for hope, tolerance and respect in times where these values are under pressure through economic, political and social developments.
Andrea Voets and Blake Weston met during their studies at the Conservatory of Amsterdam. These musicians bring the stories of the composers and the original contexts of the pieces they perform to the foreground through consistent research and dedication. An inspiring collaboration involving a deep subject was inevitable. ‘Noot breekt wet' is the result and was premiered in 2014 as part of the Grachtenfestival in Amsterdam.

'Noot breekt wet' is een ode aan de veerkracht van de onderdrukte mens en de kracht van de muziek; misschien wel de enige uitdrukkingsvorm die overblijft wanneer woorden tekort schieten en alle kritische geesten tot zwijgen zijn gebracht.
Met het filosofische begrippenkader van Hannah Arendt als leidraad, laten Andrea en Blake horen hoe componisten leefden en werkten onder de grote totalitaire regimes van de twintigste eeuw.
Een pleidooi voor hoop, tolerantie en respect, in tijden waarin deze waarden door economische, politieke en sociale ontwikkelingen nog steeds onder druk staan.

Andrea Voets en Blake Weston leerden elkaar kennen tijdens hun studie aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Deze musici denken allebei grondig na over de interpretaties, verhalen en betekenissen die achter de muzieknoten verscholen liggen. Een inspirerende samenwerking rond een diepgravend thema bleek onvermijdelijk. 'Noot breekt wet' is het resultaat en beleefde zijn première op het Grachtenfestival 2014 in Amsterdam.
