There Are NO TENSES in Chinese? | How To Use the Particle “了” | Chinese Grammar for Beginners

Sup everyone! Rita (aka Fàn lǎoshī) here! Being inspired by a follower on Instagram, I decided to kick off 2021 with one of the biggest headaches for Chinese learners - the particle “了.”

You see it literally everywhere, but unfortunately, there are so many misconceptions about it around. How about let’s get it straight within 10 minutes, so you can improve your Mandarin Chinese grammar as well as your understanding of the language better at the beginning of 2021?!

In this video, I covered:

0:00 - Why we need to learn the Chinese particle “了”
1:04 - 了 is not a past tense marker and proofs from popular textbooks and linguistic research
2:33 - Two linguistic concepts
3:05 - What they are and English markers
6:00 - What 了 REALLY is
9:30 - A difference between grammar and fact
9:55 - Stative verbs

Let me know what you think of the questions I mentioned in the video or what you have been struggling with in your Chinese learning. Hitting like and subscribe are both huge support for original content like this video to be promoted to more Chinese learners by the YouTube algorithm! It means so much to me, so 谢谢!

Remember, with Fàn lǎoshī, Chinese makes perfect sense!
