In this video Patrick Hall of Fstoppers explores turning still photos into cinemagraphs. He first starts off with a complex photoshoot using strobes, softboxes, RGB led lights, and fans to create a still shot of a girl appearing to float or swim underwater. Then using Photoshop, the studio background is removed to create a transparent layer behind the model. A crazy fantasy back plate is created using Midjourney, an Artificial Intelligence art generator, and the final composited photo is complete. Then using Optics by Boris FX, motion graphics are added to the photograph using their Particle Illusion generator. This powerful piece of software can create customizable effects natively in the software itself for still photography, but in this instance Patrick uses Optics to build out looping video effects to complete the cinemagraph. Hopefully this tutorial on how to create a cinemagraph inspires you to remix some of your best photos and gain extra views and traction with Instagram reels, tiktok, and youtube shorts.
