East Harlem, "Spanish Harlem", "Italian Harlem", "El Barrio"; whatever known name you want to call it...just don't call it SpaHa (please 😅).

This eastern Upper Manhattan neighborhood on the river facing Queens and the Bronx, is part of the Greater Harlem area. The home of 106 & Park 🎤, Rao's 🍝, the Young Lords ✊🏽, and Carlito's Way 🧔🏻. Native ground to a list of hometown legends like Tito Puente, Joe Bataan, "Fat Tony" Salerno, @marcanthony , @katherinenarducci , @daveeast , Burt Lancaster, among many more, this neighborhood has projected itself out to the world with it's talent and notoriety.

The neighborhood is one of the largest predominantly Hispanic communities in New York City, mostly made up of Puerto Ricans 🇵🇷 who originally immigrated in waves after the First World War, and again in the 1940s and 50s. The community is notable for its contributions to poetry, activism, and music (Latin Freestyle, Salsa, and HipHop).

East Harlem also includes the area formerly known as Italian Harlem 🇮🇹, in which the remnants of a once predominantly Italian community remain.

Today, with block architecture varying from brownstones, to classic tenements, public housing, to brand new luxury developments, the lower-income East Harlem community is facing a wave of gentrification quickly entering the scene

We decided it would be best to document the neighborhood in Streets By Air, for History's sake. Here's to El Barrio, the loud and proud neighborhood in uptown Manhattan. 🗽
